Radial Shock Wave Therapy (RSWT) is a noninvasive method that uses pressure waves to treat musculoskeletal conditions. High energy shock waves deliver mechanical force to the bodies tissues. Research has shown the therapy to have an 80% success rate with tennis elbow tendinitis, shoulder tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis and the healing of wounds. The number of treatments is 3-5 and the results occur within 12 weeks.
How does it heal?
Persistent tendinitis is due to incorrect healing of tissue with scar tissue. The shock waves break up the scar tissue setting up the necessary inflammation to assist the tendons to heal correctly. Normal use and exercises need to all so be incorporated in the treatment program. Your therapist will instruct you with the correct exercise. You may take Tylenol for pain but no anti-inflammatory medications.
How is it different from ultrasound therapy?
Ultrasound has a low peak pressure, frequency of the waves are 1- 3 MHz. providing a thermal effect. Shock waves have a high pick pressure, a frequency of 1-100Hz. Providing a mechanical effect.
Specific Technique:
A probe is placed over a specific area, which you and your therapist determine to be the exact location to be treated. A gel helps the conduction and the probe is held stationary on the specific problem area. Treatment time is usual a few minutes.
